From the Pastor's desk . . .What Kingsley Armstrong brought to us last month about "The Scarlet Cord", was a powerful reminder that we should look at our lives through the filter of HOPE, not a hope that is a vague desire for something, but the surety that Jesus has every resource we need and has promised it to us. Does that mean everything is going to go well for us? We can experience some great things, but success is not guaranteed, not all the time, even for the Christian. Often in life, we discover that our hopes and expectations are dashed, we suffer disappointment and wonder if those heavenly resources really ARE available, if God IS as good as we thought He was.
Hardship tends to expose our core beliefs about God and the values we hold. But God never promises us an easy "charmed" life (see 2Tim 3:12 AMP). In fact, the writer of the book of Ecclesiastes states that "Life is meaningless". If that's true, what's the point?
Over 40 times, the writer of Ecclesiastes uses the word "hevel", which means "vapour" or "smoke" to describe life events. Try to grab smoke and you can't, even though it's there and seems real. Smoke is here and then it's gone - it's fleeting, just as are the things which happen to us - they don't last, they all "come to pass". Even doing the "right" thing in life or trying to accumulate "stuff" doesn't satisfy for long or bring true happiness. Investing in what is eternal is the only answer.
We cannot always grasp the meaning of what is happening to us, but God has the bigger picture and we are told to hope and trust in Him. There are so many scriptures which exhort us to hope in God. Why not spend a while this month with your Bible and concordance seeking them out, beginning with Romans chapter 5?
