Over the summer months we have been learning quite a few new worship songs. Not all of us have melodic voices, but we have been attempting to "make a joyful noise". Of course, singing is not the only form of praise and worship, but it is important.
Worship and praise are not for God's benefit - He doesn't have an ego problem - God commands it of us because it is for our own good. Praise determines our perspective - God gets bigger and our problem gets smaller in comparison. Our faith rises, our determination grows, we thank God for His faithful provision and speak out His magnificent qualities. Our passion rises and we begin to rave about Him! We remind ourselves of how much He loves us, gain confidence, become full of faith in Him and begin to wield that "two-edged sword" as we vocalise our heart-felt praise.
Music is a powerful medium which is well able to whip up emotions. It can stir us up or calm us down. But worshipping God is not the same as being stirred by a piece of music. A person can enjoy singing exuberantly along to their favourite secular song, or a piece of opera, or even the National Anthem, but it's not worship! "Christian " music can help us to feel okay about ourselves and even escape from our problems, but when the music stops, nothing has changed in our lives; we have the same issues, problems and disappointments. All we did was escape into the comforting power of music.
When we worship, we need a revelation of God and communion with Him. We must "believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him" (Heb 11 v 6). Praise is not just a celebration; it can be prophetic and is a form of warfare. It isn't just to make us feel good - it is a weapon in the Christian's armoury. Even if you can't hold a tune, it doesn't matter - God won't love you any less! Above all, He desires a people who are worshippers, people who are eager to acknowledge God is amazing, that His plan is the best, that He is in charge.
